A Day Trip from Durango, CO to Silverton, CO

There is a narrow gage train that runs from Durango, Colorado to Silverton.  It's an all day ride which is too much for mom so we drove to Silverton instead.  The drive is only an hour but we managed to stretch that 2 hour trip (up and back) into four hours.  Here we see the train crossing the road.  This is another train very much like the Skunk Train in Willits California where we are from.

Oh look a beaver pond.

Pinkerton Hot Springs

Look how tall the Dandelions are this year.

When we arrived in Silverton we found a deli and grabbed a sandwich and chips and drove down to the river and ate lunch.  I  was going to take a picture of the river but as we were eating, here came the train so I quickly turned the car around so we could wave to the riders and forgot to take the picture.  Oh well.  After lunch we drove around the area looking at houses and flowers in bloom before heading back to Durango.

We will head east tomorrow so will catch up with you later.

  1. I called the road from Durango to Silverton the "holy shit" road because that was what I said around every bend. Those mountains! That drop-off! Yikes!! It's nice to relive it through your blog.
